The name Nomad was then applied in 1968-1972 to the lowest priced Chevelle four door station wagon model. An finally in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the name returned again on a trim package for the full size Chevrolet Van.
1954 Chevrolet Nomad Experimental Show Car The 1954 Chevrolet Corvette Nomad (seen above) was a concept car built by General Motors and introduced at the 1954 General Motors Motorama in New York City. The Nomad was decidedly a sporty wagon way ahead of its time. It was such a huge success that some of the unique features were applied to the 1955, 1956 and 1957 Nomads and early Corvettes.

Chevrolet did produced about 8,500 Nomads beginning mid year 1955. It arrived as a two-door station wagon based on the sporty Bel Air series and projected almost a Cadillac image. The headlamps were slightly hooded, the grille was new, the wrap a round windshield was very fashionable, a special trail gate and the stylized slanted B pillars are what made the 1955 Nomad very popular. The Nomad was a beautifully clean design that showed a strong influence of General Motors styling engineer, Harley Earl.

For 1956, the Nomad got a few small styling changes. The grill was bigger and wider and included a horizontal bar. The small tail lights on the 1955 Nomad gave way to larger tail light housings. Plus the fuel filler cap was hidden behind the driver side tail lamp. Only 8,000 Nomads were sold in the 1956 production year. Chevrolet had hoped for better Nomad sales. Regular Bel Air 4 door station wagons out sold the Nomad almost two to one. The 1955 and 1956 Nomads are more popular today than 50 years ago. Just like the name Bel Air, the Chevy Nomad is well known and highly sought after.
1957 Chevrolet Nomad Custom
More styling revisions were made by Chevrolet on the 1957 Nomad. Most noticeable are the rear fender fins and a massive grille while the same body and frame were retained. 1957 Nomad sales reached just over 6,500. The low production figures worked in car collectors favor in one way. The low numbers helped it become a very desirable collectible today and worth restoring when found in any condition.
